Who is this Course For?

This course is suitable for anyone looking to gain an understanding of mental health, with the aim of being able to provide advice and practical support for others in the workplace. It provides learners with the resources and knowledge to be able to identify signs of stress and various mental health conditions, with the aim of guiding them towards the correct support and improving their organisation’s mental health culture.

**Please be aware that this course focuses on employees in the workplace and covers subjects that some people may find distressing, including suicide and self-harm. If a delegate feels overwhelmed they can leave the course at any time. However, if you feel in advance that this subject may be too distressing for the delegate please do not book them on without first asking them whether they would feel comfortable attending.**

Overview

This 6-hour qualification provides learners with the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions and not diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals, but will gain the knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where they can go to get help.

Those who achieve this qualification could progress onto the FAA Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health.

Aim

The aim of the qualification is to give learners knowledge and competency on how to start a supportive conversation, when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help. Learners will know how to recognise and manage stress and understand the impact of substance abuse.

Core Exercises

The course will cover how to:

  • Defining mental health
  • Understand the stigma surrounding mental health
  • Identify factors that can affect a person’s mental health
  • Understand the role of a first aider for mental health
  • Outline the advice that should be provided to a person suffering from a suspected mental health condition
  • Know when to contact emergency services
  • Identify signs of stress and how stress can be managed
  • Identify signs and symptoms for the following mental health conditions; depression, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, suicide and self harm.
  • Effects of alcohol and drug abuse on a person’s mental health
  • Demonstrate the application of the first aid action plan for mental health
  • Key factors in providing a positive mental health culture in the workplace
  • How to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace.

Examination

The qualification is assessed through a written assessment paper and the practical demonstration of the first aid action plan for mental health. Learners must successfully pass both parts of the assessment to be awarded the qualification.

There is no grading of the assessment; learners pass or are referred.

Am I Suitable?

  • The qualification is available to learners aged 14 or over.
  • It is recommended that learners should hold a minimum of Level 1 in literacy or equivalent to undertake this qualification.

What Will I Get?

  • By the end of this course the learner will gain the knowledge and competence required to deal with first aid for mental health.
  • The qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is strongly recommended that the learner attends annual refresher training.
