Who is this Course For?

This qualification is aimed at learners who wish to become first-aiders in the workplace. This qualification meets the requirements for training first-aiders in those organisations that have identified that staff need to be trained to this level within their first-aid needs assessment.

Overview

The qualification consists of two units which learners must successfully complete to achieve the full qualification. Learners completing just unit 1 can be certificated with the FAA Award in Emergency First Aid.

Aim

The aim of the qualification is to give learners knowledge and responsibilities on how to assess an incident. The qualification also covers first aid skills in CPR and use of an AED, providing first aid to a casualty who is choking and dealing with external bleeding and hypovolaemic shock.

Core Exercises

The course will cover how to:

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Assessing an incident
  • Provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty
  • Provide first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
  • Provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock
  • Provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries
  • Conduct a secondary survey
  • Provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  • Provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
  • Provide first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injuries
  • Provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
  • Provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury
  • Provide first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning
  • Provide first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Provide first aid to a casualty with suspected major illness

Examination

To complete this qualification learners should expect to undertake 22 hours of learning, typically over three days, with a minimum contact time of 18 hours.

The qualification is assessed through practical demonstration, oral questioning and written assessment. A learner must successfully pass both the written and practical assessments to achieve the qualification. There is no grading of the assessment; learners pass or are referred.

What Will I Get?

  • A qualification valid for three years from the date of achievement.
  • Knowledge and practical competence required to deal with a range of workplace first aid situations.
